andy lopez was killed while carrying a bb gun designed to look like an assault rifle, the latest in a series of investigations of his death is now underway. >> reporter: there is probably close to 200 people here in old court house square in downtown santa rosa. this is only one of the locations demonstrators are meeting at. we'll give you a closer look now. the other location is santa rosa junior college from. what we understand, both groups here will combine and march to the sonoma county sheriffs office in a couple hours. as the anger grows, so does the memorial that honors 13 year old andy lopez in the same place he was shot by a deputy. there is a key of candles, photographs and messages to the boy. this is where police say a week ago andy was carrying a toy gun deputies thought was an assault rifle. he did not comply with orders to drop the gun. we spoke with one saying this community is growing more frustrated before it wasn't fair for him and his family. the cops should somehow do something else, not shoot him seven times. it's not fair. >> reporter: sonoma county sheriff

on the way to the sheriff's office before staging a peaceful protest for andy lopez. when that crowd arrived, sheriff's deputies stood in front of the building in head to to riot gear. barricades were also blocking the entrances to that building. the funeral for andy lopez got underway just about an hour ago. our andrea borba is right outside. andrea. >> reporter: services started just a few minutes ago. you can actually hear the choir singing from where i am standing. andy's coffin was carried in by what looked to be school he aged friends and family from the hurst inside resurrection church here in santa rosa. as he was carried in, you could hear sorrowful hims being sung in spanish. the church absolutely packed. standing room only there as this community is still in mourning. >> i felt really sad, especially for the family, even for my father. i know it was his friend. it really hurts. >> reporter: now, the funeral for andy lopez, of course, is not happening right now as we speak, but the burial stand still very much in the air at this point. no set burial date or time has been set yet. w

that service is taking place for andy lopez. what's going on jean? >> reporter: a day of demonstration is now turning to a day of prayer. take a look. you can see there is a hearse here. andy lopez's body arrived about ten minutes ago. officials from the church are coming out to greet the body. hundreds of people are expected. we're seeing a lot of families startingo pour into the church here. i'm seeing a lot of emotional long faces as people file into the church. this mass was scheduled to begin at 5:00. it's going to begin a little bit late as people begin to file in again and again. people are here. they say they are here to support the lopez family, to support them emotionally and to support their efforts to seek justice for the 13-year-old. i can hear some singing inside the church. we're waiting for the body to be taken inside the church. the funeral mass will last about an hour and a half. it will be in spanish. someone claiming to be a family member is asking for a peaceful night on andy's facebook page. we'll have an update for you tonight at 6:00. >> stay with us for continuing cov
, but as night falls the mood will be reflective. the family of andy lopez is holding a memorial service which begins shortly. we have two reports tonight. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez has been with the protesters. we begin with jean at the funeral for this boy. >> reporter: raj, an emotional crowd is here gathered for andy lopez's funeral. take a look. you can see this church is full. there are people standing in the doorways, listening, wanting to say good-bye to the 13-year-old boy. there are lots of young families here with long faces. the service was scheduled to begin at 5:00, but started around 5:30. a group of young pallbearers and church leaders in white robes at resurrection parish church in santa rosa brought the 13-year-old body's inside while a silent crowd watched. hundreds of people from all over the bay area are here. many came from an earlier protest demanding justice for protest. angry a sonoma county sheriffs deputy shot the teen because he had a toy rifle. people who know the lopez family says it's a relief to see so much support. >> this is very powerful. this is somethin
